For many, living with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can pose unique challenges, affecting many different aspects of daily life, such as work, school, and relationships. When patients first come to us for help, they often have issues with maintaining focus, problems meeting deadlines, increased stress, issues with organization, and time management.
Fortunately, there are supportive solutions and tools for ADHD that effectively help one lead a more fulfilling life. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one such solution that holds great promise. In this article, we will show you three easy steps to effectively use AI, such as ChatGPT, as one of your productivity tools for ADHD that will significantly simplify your life.
Individuals with ADHD have long turned to assistive technologies (AT) to help navigate their unique challenges. Various options exist, like focus-boosting browser extensions, timer apps, digital organizers, note-taking, and task management systems. Many individuals use these technologies as ADHD tools to improve focus, organization, time management, and overall productivity.
Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have opened up new avenues for individuals with ADHD to leverage their time more effectively to get more done with less effort. This information has yet to be discovered by many because AI has only recently made significant developments.
Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, uses special algorithms to perform tasks and make complex decisions that previously required human intelligence. It does this by using a language learning model that improves over time by analyzing data patterns to give better answers to questions. With each new version, the power of AI increases exponentially.
If you are unfamiliar with AI, it’s fairly straightforward and easy to use. You can simply ask it questions and often get great answers to solve common problems quickly.
Below are three steps that show how to use ChatGPT as one of your ADHD-helping tools efficiently.
The better your question is, the better answer you’ll get. Take, for example, patients with challenges planning meetings and job interviews.
One of the challenges was knowing where to start.
There was a lack of clarity. Telling ChatGPT some background information went a long way in answering their questions. We worked with them during the session to create the structure they needed to take action.
When providing context to ChatGPT, you can include relevant details such as your current skillset, meeting agenda items, and general information about what the stakeholders want to know.
If you are asking for organizational tips, instead of asking, “How can I stay more organized?” provide more detail, such as, “I am preparing for a marketing meeting with potential clients. I have ADHD and often struggle with time management and remembering tasks. What specific strategies can I use to stay organized during the meeting?”
In this case, the response you will receive covers key essential areas such as preparation, digital tools, visual aids, active engagement, breaks, post-meeting review, and delegating. The strategies also considered how to set a routine, which was helpful to inattentive symptoms.
However, there was a need for clarity regarding certain other information, such as identifying specific daily habits you could implement to ensure the success of future meetings. You can proceed to ask additional clarifying questions about these daily success habits.
“I often find myself overwhelmed while preparing for meetings because I am unsure what to prioritize. Could you generate more specific strategies on how I can effectively prepare for the meeting without becoming stressed out? For example, what key areas should I prioritize, and how much time should I allocate to each aspect of preparation?”
By asking the question this way, you give ChatGPT greater context about your difficulty and examples of more specific strategies. The more specific your questions are, the more tailored the responses ChatGPT will generate for you.
One of the great things about AI is its tendency to generate a multitude of answers that people often do not think to ask. In your journey to improve your ADHD and productivity, you can ask questions about certain situations.
In the previous example of preparing for important meetings, ChatGPT suggested valuable ways to set routines to establish the right consistency in habits.
When seeking strategies to manage ADHD in a particular setting, you can ask more questions about relaxation techniques to incorporate in short intervals a few times daily to help you stay on task.
Additionally, questions concerning the optimal times for rest and breaks are useful for balancing work and rest. Another frequent area of interest to patients was using digital tools to establish reminders, such as phone apps.
Following these steps will equip you with valuable insight into what to prioritize in creating the best daily habits for success.
“I’ve read about the importance of regular exercise when setting a routine, especially for someone with ADHD. Can you explain how physical activity could influence my daily routine?” Another question could be: “I’m interested in using digital tools to help establish my routine. Can you suggest any apps or online resources that might be particularly helpful?”
After ChatGPT provides each answer, you can follow up by offering more context and asking clarifying questions to generate new strategies for managing ADHD symptoms in a specific setting.
It is important to note that AI is a “language learning model.” This means that not all of the answers AI produces will be correct. AI may give seven excellent answers and one wrong answer. While AI can give you general advice and support, it should not replace professional medical advice and treatment. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personal medical questions and concerns.
AI’s effectiveness in answering questions depends heavily on how good of a question you ask. Starting with one question often leads to a few other queries based on the responses it generates. Using AI, such as ChatGPT, can help you consider how to apply solutions to different ways that you otherwise might not have considered.
Although many consider AI to be informational only, we have seen numerous patients successfully adopt better habits in managing their ADHD symptoms. It is also essential to review any of your findings with your healthcare provider to check your understanding and get any additional recommendations.
