What Are Panic Attacks?
Panic attacks are abrupt surges of intense fear or discomfort that can build up within minutes. They can occur unexpectedly or be triggered by specific situations. Symptoms vary but often include cold sweats, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, shaking, and a feeling of impending doom.
Individuals who suffer from frequent panic attacks are often diagnosed with panic disorder, a type of anxiety disorder. It affects about 6.8 million American adults, or 2.7% of the U.S. population. The definite cause of panic attacks is still unclear, but factors like genetics, stress, and changes in brain function are believed to play a role.
